The Smile Dental outreach mobile set off once again as Smile Dental Group CEO Dr. Cheng-Lun Chiang and Dr. Chao-Hsiao Yeh led a clinical team of dental assistants to the Mu-Kwang Blind Rehabilitation Center in Dongshan, Yilan. Equipped with dental models and educational tools, the team gloved up, held the students’ hands, and guided individuals with visual impairments step-by-step to feel the exact angulation of a toothbrush and the tactile rhythm of flossing. Through clinical expertise and genuine companionship, they honored medicine's truest calling: meeting people where they are.

From Treating Eye Diseases to Rebuilding Lives: Founder Dr. Chen Wu-fu’s Compassionate Vision
來到慕光，很難不被這裡沉靜卻充滿韌性的氛圍所打動。這座陪伴視障朋友走過半世紀的家園，源自一位深刻改變台灣盲人福利史的醫者——被譽為「台灣史懷哲」的陳五福醫師。
Stepping into Mu-Kwang, it is impossible not to be moved by its quiet yet deeply resilient atmosphere. This sanctuary, which has stood alongside individuals with visual impairments for over half a century, was founded by a physician who transformed the history of blind welfare in Taiwan—Dr. Chen Wu-fu, revered as the "Albert Schweitzer of Taiwan."
早年在宜蘭羅東開設「五福眼科」的陳醫師，每天在診間面對成百上千的眼疾患者。然而，最讓他錐心難忘的，是那些因先天遺傳、嚴重感染或意外而徹底失明的病人。每當宣布醫療已無力回天時，患者臉上浮現的茫然、驚恐與絕望，總深深烙印在他心頭。身為醫者，陳五福醫師不斷叩問自己：
In his early career running the Wu-Fu Eye Clinic in Luodong, Yilan, Dr. Chen saw hundreds of patients daily. Yet, what weighed most heavily on his conscience were those who lost their sight entirely due to hereditary conditions, severe infections, or accidents. Each time he had to deliver the heartbreaking news that medical intervention could do no more, the look of bewilderment, terror, and despair on their faces etched itself permanently into his memory. As a healer, Dr. Chen constantly wrestled with a soul-searching question:

醫術有其極限，但關懷沒有終點。民國 48 年（1959 年），在妻子陳連年女士的全力支持下，陳醫師毅然自費購地，創辦了「慕光盲人習藝所」（慕光盲人重建中心前身）。他深信：眼睛看不見，依然能用心生活、用心看世界；失去視力，並不代表失去活得有尊嚴、能獨立謀生的權利。
While clinical medicine has its limits, human compassion knows no bounds. In 1959, with the full backing of his wife, Lien-Nien Chen, Dr. Chen used his own savings to purchase land and establish the Mu-Kwang Blind Vocational Center (the predecessor of the Mu-Kwang Blind Rehabilitation Center). He firmly believed that even without eyesight, people can still live and perceive the world with their hearts; losing vision should never strip away one's dignity or the right to earn an independent living.
同年，陳醫師讀到史懷哲醫師在非洲行醫奉獻的事蹟，深受觸動，親筆寫信至遠在非洲蘭巴倫的史懷哲醫院。不久後，史懷哲親自回信勉勵他：「在為受苦者服務的路上，我們彼此相通。」這份跨越重洋的知己之情與精神共鳴，成為陳五福醫師一生的支柱，兩人此後持續通信，陳醫師也將這份純粹的人道精神徹底實踐在慕光的泥土裡。
That same year, deeply moved by Dr. Albert Schweitzer’s humanitarian service in Africa, Dr. Chen wrote a personal letter to Schweitzer's hospital in Lambaréné. Schweitzer soon replied with an encouraging message: "In our service to those who suffer, our paths are united." This ocean-spanning bond of kindred spirits became a lifelong pillar of strength for Dr. Chen. The two continued to correspond, and Dr. Chen rooted that pure humanitarian spirit deep into the very fabric of Mu-Kwang.

日常的衛教多半依賴投影片與視覺示範，但走進慕光，蒔美牙醫義診團隊深知這套常規模式必須徹底翻轉。為了讓視障朋友真正掌握口腔保健的細節，江政倫執行長、葉昭孝醫師與牙科助理們全員戴上手套，將衛教轉化為一對一、手把手的「觸覺感知」教學，一步步引導學員建立肌肉記憶。
Conventional oral health education relies heavily on slides and visual demonstrations. At Mu-Kwang, however, the Smile Dental team knew this standard approach had to be entirely reimagined. To help individuals with visual impairments master the nuances of oral hygiene, CEO Dr. Cheng-Lun Chiang, Dr. Chao-Hsiao Yeh, and their dental assistants put on gloves and turned the session into a tailored, tactile, one-on-one experience—guiding each student step-by-step to build lasting muscle memory.

Exploring Dental Anatomy in 3D: Guiding students' hands across anatomical tooth models, the team helped them feel the grooves on chewing surfaces, the interdental spaces, and the curvature along the gumline, clearly identifying the hidden spots where plaque tends to accumulate.
手把手體會刷牙角度與力道
醫師與助理輕握學員的手，帶領手指調整刷柄傾斜度，讓學員親身感知刷毛貼合齒頸部 45 度角的微細觸感，以及小幅度水平輕顫的適當力道，不再憑空摸索。
Hands-On Angulation and Pressure: Clinicians gently rested their hands over the students' fingers to adjust the brush handle's tilt, letting them physically register the subtle feel of bristles placed at a 45-degree angle along the gumline, paired with a gentle, short vibratory stroke—taking the guesswork out of brushing.
牙線精準定位與 C 字包覆
牙縫清潔往往最容易受傷或遺漏。團隊夥伴放慢動作，逐步引導學員如何將牙線穩固纏繞指尖、順著牙面滑入齒縫，並體會牙線緊貼齒面呈現「C 字型」上下刮拭的張力與手感。
Precise Floss Placement and the C-Shape Wrap: Interdental spaces are the easiest areas to neglect or injure. Team members broke down each motion, guiding students on how to wrap floss securely around their fingers, glide it smoothly between teeth, and hug the tooth surface in a "C-shape" to feel the tension and tactile feedback of an upward scrape.

Dr. Chao-Hsiao Yeh: Five Years of Returning and Watching the Seeds of Kindness Take Root
自 2021 年起，葉昭孝醫師每年都會回到慕光舉辦口腔健康講座，今年已是他第五度造訪。對於同行的年輕團隊來說，這是一場走入人心的專業洗禮：

"I was first invited to speak at Mu-Kwang in 2021, and this year marks my fifth time returning to this campus nestled in rural Yilan.
Each year, Mu-Kwang welcomes new students with congenital or acquired visual impairments who come to build self-sufficiency, learn a trade, and rejoin society. Every single time I visit, I am deeply touched by their vitality and their genuine curiosity whenever they ask questions.
While our workshops focus on oral healthcare, through answering their questions and sharing these moments together, I always walk away feeling that I am the one who gained the most. Bringing our younger team members from Smile Dental along this year and watching them guide the students with such patience and tenderness was incredibly moving. This spirit of goodwill deserves to be carried forward, and my hope is that the seeds of compassion planted by Dr. Chen Wu-fu will grow into expansive trees, offering shade in all of our hearts."
